Charles F. Upchurch
"Lucia's Last Set"
Beaufort Artist Charles Upchurch was born in Boston, and
began oil painting in 1958, under the tutelage of prominent
New England artist Paul Noble James, and began selling
original works at age thirteen.
During the 1970’s he traveled throughout the United States,
Mexico and Canada, producing numerous works which strove to
capture visual images unique to each area. Subjects have
ranged from Rocky Mountain meadows, Southwest desert mesas,
and rugged Mexican coastlines to New England lighthouses and
harbor scenes from East, West, and Gulf coasts.
Workboats have always been a particular interest since he
was a crew member aboard a cod dragger that worked George’s
Banks and the North Atlantic. Having returned to the
Atlantic Coast, he is now living at Beaufort Docks, aboard
the trawler "LUCIA", which also serves as his studio.
His paintings can be seen from Nova Scotia to Costa Rica,
New Orleans to Paris, and locally have been on display at
Art Master’s Gallery, Artworks, Matthew’s Front Street, and
Taylor’s Creek Antiques, all located in Beaufort, NC.
